Do You Need a Regular Gardener in Cornwall?

One of the most common conversations I have with new customers starts with them telling me they've been meaning to sort the garden out for a while. Either life got busy, the physical side of garden maintenance has become more difficult, or the Cornish growing season simply got ahead of them and the garden is now harder to manage than they'd like.

What most of these customers actually need isn't a one-off blitz — it's a regular maintenance schedule that keeps the garden manageable throughout the year. But a lot of people aren't sure what a regular service actually involves or whether it's the right choice for their situation. This is my honest take on it.

What Does a Regular Garden Maintenance Service Include?

A regular maintenance visit typically covers the following, adjusted to what the garden needs at that point in the season:

• Lawn mowing: Cutting the grass to the right height for the time of year, edging along paths and borders, and collecting or dispersing clippings. In summer in Cornwall this typically means a weekly visit for the lawn alone to keep up with the growth rate.
• Border maintenance: Weeding beds and borders, deadheading where appropriate, and keeping plants tidy. The frequency of border work varies more with the season than mowing.
• Hedge trimming: Usually carried out on a seasonal basis — once or twice a year for most garden hedges — rather than on every visit.
• General tidy: Clearing fallen leaves, removing dead material, sweeping paths and keeping the garden looking cared-for on each visit.

The exact scope depends on the garden and the customer's preferences. Some people want a full service covering everything. Others just want the lawn done and will manage the borders themselves. It's a conversation at the start, not a fixed package.

How Often Do I Need Someone to Come?

In Cornwall, most domestic gardens need more frequent maintenance than the same garden would in a drier, less mild part of the country. The typical schedules I work to:

• Weekly (April–September): For gardens where the lawn is the priority and needs to look its best throughout the growing season. The most common arrangement for customers who take pride in their lawns.
• Fortnightly (April–September): Works well for smaller gardens or where the lawn is less of a priority. Every two weeks is enough to stay on top of growth in most situations, though a very wet June can push grass to the point where fortnightly visits leave it slightly long.
• Monthly (October–March): Growth slows significantly in autumn and winter, though in Cornwall it never fully stops. A monthly visit through the quieter months maintains tidiness without unnecessary work.

Many of my regular customers have a weekly or fortnightly schedule from spring through to autumn, then drop to monthly or occasional visits over winter. It's flexible and we adjust it based on what the garden actually needs.

Who Benefits Most from a Regular Service?

A regular maintenance service isn't for everyone. It makes most sense for:

• People who value their outdoor space but don't have time to maintain it: Having someone reliable who turns up and keeps things tidy means you actually get to enjoy the garden rather than feeling guilty about the state of it every time you look out of the window.
• Older customers for whom the physical side of gardening has become difficult: Mowing, kneeling to weed, hedge cutting — these are genuinely hard work and can become impossible after injury, illness or simply with age. A regular service means the garden stays cared-for regardless.
• Holiday let owners: Gardens attached to rental properties need to be presentable at the start of each let. A reliable scheduled service means that's taken care of without you having to think about it.
• Second homeowners: Cornish second homes are left unattended for weeks or months at a time. In that period, a Cornish garden will grow substantially. A regular maintenance visit while you're away means you come back to a garden that's in order, not a project.

One-Off vs Regular: What's the Difference in Practice?

A one-off garden visit is useful when you need something specific done — a clearance, a hedge trim, a patio cleaned. But it doesn't address the underlying maintenance need. A fortnight after a one-off mow, the lawn is long again. Six weeks after a one-off weed, the borders need doing again.

A regular service solves the problem permanently rather than temporarily. The garden stays in a consistent condition throughout the season. Individual jobs are quicker and easier because they're never getting ahead of schedule. And the cumulative effect on the garden — the health of the lawn, the tidiness of the borders, the appearance of the space overall — is much better than a series of reactive one-offs.

For customers who've converted from one-off visits to a regular schedule, the consistent feedback is that they wish they'd done it sooner.

What Does It Cost?

Pricing depends on the size of the garden, the scope of the work and the frequency of visits. I always come out to the garden first before quoting, because the same-sized lawn in two different gardens can take very different amounts of time depending on the obstacles, the shape, the slope and the access.
