Autumn is one of the most important times of year for your garden in Cornwall — and one of the most underrated. While most people focus on tidying up the borders and cutting the lawn back, fallen leaves are often left where they land. That's understandable — it doesn't seem urgent. But in our wet Cornish climate, it's a mistake that can cost you significantly in lawn repairs come spring.

Why Are Fallen Leaves a Problem?

A thin scatter of leaves won't do much harm. The issue is when they build up into a thick, wet layer — which happens surprisingly quickly in Cornwall's autumn rains. Once that layer forms:

• The grass beneath suffocates — leaves block sunlight and trap moisture against the grass, preventing photosynthesis and causing the grass to yellow and die off in patches.
• Fungal disease spreads — the damp, airless environment under wet leaves is ideal for lawn diseases like red thread and fusarium, which are already more common in Cornwall's mild, wet winters.
• Moss moves in — compacted wet leaves create the exact conditions moss thrives in, and once moss takes hold it's hard to shift.
• Paths and patios become dangerous — wet leaves on hard surfaces turn into a slippery, staining mess that can also block drainage channels and gutters.
• Pests shelter underneath — slugs, snails and other pests overwinter under leaf piles, ready to attack new growth in spring.

The wetter and milder the autumn — which in Cornwall is most autumns — the faster these problems develop.

When Should You Clear Leaves in Cornwall?

The honest answer is: regularly throughout October and November rather than one big clear-up at the end. Leaves don't all fall at once, and by the time they're all down they've often already been sitting wet for weeks.

A practical approach is to clear leaves as they build up — ideally after a dry spell when they're lighter to collect and don't mat together as badly. Two or three clears through autumn is usually enough for most gardens, though heavily tree-lined plots may need more.

Can I Leave Leaves on Borders and Beds?

On flower beds and borders, a thin layer of leaves is actually fine — it acts as a natural mulch and provides some insulation for plant roots. The key word is thin. A thick, compacted layer will still cause the same problems of smothering and disease. If you have deciduous trees dropping heavily onto your borders, it's worth clearing the bulk and leaving just a light covering.

Keep leaves off the lawn entirely — grass has no benefit from a leaf covering, only harm.

What to Do With Collected Leaves

Leaves are a brilliant garden resource if you have the space and inclination to compost them. Leaf mould — composted leaves — is one of the best soil conditioners you can use in Cornish gardens, helping to improve the structure of our often clay-heavy soil. It takes 12–18 months for leaves to break down properly, so a simple wire mesh enclosure in a corner of the garden works well.
